Q19 · 2 marks · Very short answerRay Optics and Optical Instruments
A ray of monochromatic light passes through an equilateral glass prism in such a way that the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of emergence and each of these angles is 3/4 times the angle of the prism. Determine the angle of deviation and the refractive index of the glass prism.

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
When , what can you say about the deviation?
Hint 2
Use , then .
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
For an equilateral prism . Since , the ray passes symmetrically and the deviation is minimum.
.
Using : . - 1 mark
Refractive index:
Answer: Angle of deviation = 30° (minimum deviation); refractive index = √2 ≈ 1.41
Where the marks are
- Uses ⇒ minimum deviation, finds and (1 mark)
- Uses prism formula to get (1 mark)
