CBSE Class 12 Physics sample paper 2023-24: question 17

From the official CBSE sample question paper for 2023-24, section B, question 17, for 2 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q17 · 2 marks · Very short answerSemiconductor Electronics: Materials, Devices and Simple Circuits

(a) Name the device which utilizes unilateral action of a pn diode to convert ac into dc.
(b) Draw the circuit diagram of full wave rectifier.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Think of the circuit that changes alternating voltage into one-direction voltage.

Hint 2

For full wave, you need a transformer with a centre tap and two diodes, one conducting in each half cycle.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (a) The device is a rectifier. It uses the fact that a pn junction diode conducts only when forward biased, so it converts ac into dc.

    1 mark
  2. (b) Full wave rectifier circuit (described): The ac input goes to the primary of a centre-tap transformer. The two ends A and B of the secondary connect to the p-sides of diodes and . The n-sides of both diodes are joined together and connected to one end of the load resistance . The other end of goes to the centre tap of the secondary. The output is taken across . In one half cycle conducts and in the other conducts, so current through always flows in the same direction.

    1 mark

Answer: (a) Rectifier; (b) centre-tap full wave rectifier circuit with two diodes and load .

Where the marks are

  • Names the device as rectifier (1 mark)
  • Correct, labelled circuit of full wave rectifier: centre-tap transformer, two diodes, load resistance, output (1 mark)
