CBSE Class 12 Mathematics 2024: question 36(a)

Set in the CBSE Class 12 board exam of 2024, paper 65/5/1, section E, question 36(a), for 4 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q36(a) · 4 marks · Case-basedCompetency-basedRelations and Functions

Students of a school are taken to a railway museum to learn about railways heritage and its history. An exhibit in the museum depicted many rail lines on the track near the railway station. Let L be the set of all rail lines on the railway track and R be the relation on L defined by

On the basis of the above information, answer the following questions :

  1. (i)

Find whether the relation R is symmetric or not.

    1 mark
  2. (ii)

Find whether the relation R is transitive or not.

    1 mark
  3. (iii)

If one of the rail lines on the railway track is represented by the equation , then find the set of rail lines in R related to it.

    2 marks

Figure in the paper: Photograph of several parallel rail lines on a track near a railway station, with a train engine and hills in the background. See it in the official paper.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

For symmetry, ask: if line 1 is parallel to line 2, is line 2 parallel to line 1?

Hint 2

For transitivity, think about two lines that are both parallel to a third line.

Hint 3

Parallel lines have equal slopes; what is the slope of ?

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (i) Let . Then , so , and hence . Therefore R is symmetric.

    1 mark
  2. (ii) Let and . Then and , so [lines parallel to the same line are parallel to each other]. Hence , and R is transitive.

    1 mark
  3. (iii) The lines related to are exactly the lines parallel to it, i.e. the lines with the same slope .

    The required set is .

    2 marks

Answer: (i) Symmetric; (ii) Transitive; (iii)

Where the marks are

  • Shows , so R is symmetric (1 mark)
  • Shows , so R is transitive (1 mark)
  • Set of lines (2 marks)
