Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

The array form takes just two arguments.

Hint 2

What does LOOKUP return if the exact value is missing?

Hint 3

The shape of the array decides whether it searches a row or a column.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. The array form of LOOKUP searches for a value in the first row or first column of an array and returns the value in the same position from the last row or last column.

    1 mark
  2. Syntax: LOOKUP(lookup_value, array). lookup_value can be a number, text, logical value or a name; array is the range of cells to search.

    1 mark
  3. If LOOKUP cannot find lookup_value, it uses the largest value in the array that is less than or equal to it; if lookup_value is smaller than the smallest value in the first row or column, it returns #N/A.

    1 mark
  4. If the array is wider than it is tall, LOOKUP searches the first row; if it is square or taller than wide, it searches the first column.

    1 mark

Answer: LOOKUP(lookup_value, array) searches the first row or column of the array and returns the matching position from the last row or column; nearest smaller value if no exact match, #N/A if below the smallest
