Traders, conquerors and travellers carried germs with them. The Spanish conquerors of America brought smallpox, which proved to be their most powerful weapon.
- 1 mark
America's inhabitants had been isolated for a long time and had no immunity. Smallpox spread deep into the continent, often ahead of the Europeans, and wiped out whole communities, which paved the way for conquest.
Answer: Trade and conquest carried germs such as smallpox to people with no immunity, causing mass deaths.
Where the marks are
- Germs such as smallpox were carried by the conquerors (1 mark)
- No immunity among the isolated inhabitants, so deaths spread and conquest became easy (1 mark)
