Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Think of the health risks for those working underground.
Hint 2
What happens to soil, water and wildlife around a mine?
Hint 3
What do mining wastes do to rivers?
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 2 marks
Health: dust and noxious fumes inhaled by miners cause pulmonary (lung) diseases such as silicosis. Collapsing mine roofs, flooding and fires in coal mines are constant risks to life.
- 1 mark
Land and ecology: mining removes large amounts of topsoil, causing erosion, loss of habitat and disruption of local flora and fauna.
- 1 mark
Water and pollution: mining waste contaminates rivers and groundwater, harming nearby communities. Dumping of waste degrades land and air.
- 1 mark
Thus mining endangers both miners' health and the local environment, so safe and sustainable mining is needed.
Answer: Mining causes lung disease and accidents for miners, and soil erosion, habitat loss, and water and land pollution for the locality.
Where the marks are
- Respiratory diseases from dust and fumes (1 mark)
- Accident risks such as roof collapse, flooding and fires (1 mark)
- Topsoil removal, erosion, habitat loss (1 mark)
- Water contamination and waste (1 mark)
- Conclusion on need for sustainable mining (1 mark)
