Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

What material is placed inside the solenoid?

Hint 2

Think about which two quantities increase the magnetic field of a solenoid.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. An electromagnet is made by winding many turns of insulated copper wire as a coil (solenoid) around a soft iron core and passing an electric current through it. The soft iron becomes a strong magnet while current flows.

    1 mark
  2. The strength can be increased by:
    (i) increasing the number of turns in the coil;

    ½ mark
  3. (ii) increasing the current flowing through the coil.

    ½ mark

Answer: A current-carrying insulated copper coil is wound on a soft iron core. Strength increases with more turns and with more current.

Where the marks are

  • Describes making an electromagnet with a coil on a soft iron core carrying current (1 mark)
  • Gives increasing the number of turns (½ mark)
  • Gives increasing the current (½ mark)
