Q33(A) · 2 marks · Short answerCompetency-basedElectricity

A fuse in electric circuit is rated 4 A. Can it be used with an electric heater of rating 2 kW, 200 V? Explain your answer.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Convert 2 kW into watts first.

Hint 2

Find the current from power and voltage, then compare it with the fuse rating.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Current drawn by the heater:

    ½ mark
  2. ½ mark
  3. The heater needs 10 A, which is much more than the fuse rating of 4 A. The fuse wire would melt and break the circuit as soon as the heater is switched on. So this fuse cannot be used with the heater.

    1 mark

Answer: No. The heater draws 10 A, which is more than 4 A, so the fuse would melt.

Where the marks are

  • Uses with the values substituted (½ mark)
  • Obtains I = 10 A (½ mark)
  • Concludes that the fuse cannot be used because 10 A > 4 A and it would melt (1 mark)
