Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Why are the testes located outside the abdominal cavity?

Hint 2

Trace the tube that carries sperms and the common passage it joins.

Hint 3

Which part of the sperm helps it swim?

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (i) Organ: Testes. They form the male germ cells (sperms).

    1 mark
  2. (i) Condition: sperm formation needs a temperature lower than normal body temperature, which is why the testes lie in the scrotum outside the abdominal cavity. Testosterone secreted by the testes also regulates sperm formation.

    1 mark
  3. (ii) Sperms formed in the testes are carried by the vas deferens. The vas deferens joins the urethra, the common passage for sperms and urine. Pathway: Testes → Vas deferens → Urethra → out of the body. Secretions of the seminal vesicles and prostate gland are added on the way.

    2 marks
  4. (iii) The sperm has a long tail, which helps it swim towards the female germ cell.

    1 mark

Answer: (i) Testes; temperature lower than body temperature; (ii) Testes → Vas deferens → Urethra; (iii) Long tail

Where the marks are

  • Names testes (1 mark)
  • States lower than body temperature (or testosterone) as the condition (1 mark)
  • Pathway testes → vas deferens → urethra (2 marks)
  • Long tail of sperm (1 mark)
