CBSE Class 10 Science 2026: question 37
Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2026, paper 31/1/1, section C, question 37, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.
Q37 · 3 marks · Short answerMagnetic Effects of Electric Current
Answer the following.
- (a)3 marks
The pattern of magnetic field due to a current carrying wire depends upon the shape made by that wire. Justify.
- (b)0 marks
A current carrying straight wire AB is shown in the given diagram. Out of X, Y and Z on which point will the strength of magnetic field be maximum and why?
Figure in the paper: A vertical straight wire AB with A at top and B at bottom; electric current i is shown flowing upward from B to A. A horizontal dashed line to the right of the wire marks three points X, Y and Z, with X closest to the wire, Y in the middle and Z farthest. See it in the official paper.

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Compare the field lines around a straight wire, a circular loop and a solenoid.
Hint 2
For (b), think about how the field strength changes as you move away from a straight wire.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
(a) Straight wire: the field lines are concentric circles centred on the wire, lying in a plane perpendicular to it. Draw a vertical wire with circles around it and arrows given by the right-hand thumb rule.
- 1 mark
(a) Circular loop: near the wire the lines are concentric circles. Towards the centre they become nearly straight and parallel. Solenoid: the pattern is like a bar magnet, with parallel straight lines (a uniform field) inside. Drawing any two of these patterns shows that the field pattern changes with the shape of the wire.
- ½ mark
(b) The field will be maximum at X.
- ½ mark
(b) Reason: the strength of the magnetic field of a straight current-carrying wire decreases as the distance from the wire increases. X is the point closest to the wire.
Answer: (a) Straight wire gives concentric circles; loop gives circles that become straight near the centre; solenoid gives a bar-magnet-like pattern (any two). (b) At X, because the field decreases with distance from the wire.
Where the marks are
- Correct pattern/diagram for first shape of conductor (1 mark)
- Correct pattern/diagram for second shape of conductor (1 mark)
- Identifies point X (½ mark)
- Reason: field decreases with increasing distance from wire (½ mark)
