Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Ask which organ system each structure belongs to.
Hint 2
For nerves, think about the direction in which the message travels.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
(a) A nephron is the structural and functional (filtration) unit of the kidney; it filters nitrogenous wastes from blood. A neuron is the structural and functional unit of the nervous system; it transmits information (impulses) from one part of the body to another.
- 1 mark
(b) A sensory nerve carries impulses from receptors to the CNS (brain and spinal cord). A motor nerve carries impulses from the CNS to effectors (muscles or glands).
- 1 mark
(c) Consumers feed on producers or other consumers and pass energy along the food chain. Decomposers break down dead organic matter into simple inorganic substances and recycle nutrients back into the environment.
Answer: (a) Nephron: unit of kidney, filters blood; Neuron: unit of nervous system, transmits impulses. (b) Sensory: receptor → CNS; Motor: CNS → effector. (c) Consumers feed on other organisms; Decomposers break down dead matter and recycle nutrients.
Where the marks are
- One correct difference between nephron and neuron (1 mark)
- Direction of impulse in sensory vs motor nerve (1 mark)
- One correct difference between consumers and decomposers (1 mark)
