Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

What happens if the live wire touches the metal casing of an appliance and you touch it?

Hint 2

Overloading means too much current; think of the device that cuts it off and the habit that causes it.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (a) The earth wire is connected to the metallic body of appliances such as an iron, toaster or refrigerator. If current leaks to the metal body, the earth wire gives it a low-resistance path to the earth and keeps the body at the earth's potential (zero). So the user does not get a severe electric shock; the earth wire is a safety measure.

    2 marks
  2. (b) Precaution 1: use an electric fuse (or MCB) of proper rating in the circuit.

    ½ mark
  3. (b) Precaution 2: do not connect too many appliances to a single socket at the same time.

    ½ mark

Answer: (a) The earth wire keeps the metal body at earth potential and carries leaked current to earth, preventing severe shock; (b) use a fuse of proper rating; avoid connecting many appliances to one socket.

Where the marks are

  • Explains that the earth wire carries leakage current to earth and keeps the appliance body at earth potential, preventing shock (2 marks)
  • Any two precautions against overloading (½ + ½ mark)
