CBSE Class 10 Science 2025: question 28
Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2025, paper 31/4/1, section C, question 28, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.
Q28 · 3 marks · Short answerMetals and Non-metals
Design an activity to show that metals are good conductors of heat and have high melting points.

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
You need something at the far end of a metal wire that melts easily when it gets warm.
Hint 2
Think about what you would see at the far end, and what you would see at the heated part of the wire itself.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
Set-up: Take an aluminium or copper wire and clamp it to a stand. Fix a pin to its free end using a little wax.
- 1 mark
Procedure and observation: Heat the wire with a spirit lamp or burner near the clamped end. After some time the wax melts and the pin falls off, but the wire itself does not melt.
- 1 mark
Conclusion: Heat travelled along the wire to the far end and melted the wax, so metals are good conductors of heat. The wire did not melt even in the flame, so metals have high melting points.
Answer: Heat a clamped metal wire with a pin fixed by wax at its far end. The pin falls off but the wire does not melt, so metals conduct heat well and have high melting points.
Where the marks are
- Correct set-up of the activity: clamped wire with pin fixed by wax (1 mark)
- Heating and observation that the pin falls while the wire does not melt (1 mark)
- Conclusion about good heat conduction and high melting point (1 mark)
