CBSE Class 10 Science 2025: question 35(a)
Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2025, paper 31/3/1, section D, question 35(a), for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.
Q35(a) · 5 marks · Long answerHow do Organisms Reproduce?
(i) Identify the parts 'X' and 'Y' in the figure given below.
(ii) Name the yellowish coloured structures produced by the part labelled as 'Y'.
(iii) Write the name of the process by which these are transferred to the part labelled as 'X'.
(iv) Explain the process of seed formation in a flowering plant.
Figure in the paper: Diagram of a hibiscus-type flower with sepals at the base and red petals. Two labels: 'X' points to the top of the central pistil (the stigma, the knob-like tip of the pistil), and 'Y' points to one of the anthers at the tip of the stamens, which surround the pistil. Labels 'Petal' and 'Sepal' are also marked. See it in the official paper.

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Y is part of the stamen; X is the tip of the pistil.
Hint 2
Follow the path of the pollen tube to the ovule and think what the fertilised ovule becomes.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
(i) X – Stigma; Y – Anther.
- 1 mark
(ii) The anther produces yellowish pollen grains.
- 1 mark
(iii) Transfer of pollen from anther to stigma is called pollination.
- 1 mark
(iv) After pollination, a pollen tube grows out of the pollen grain and travels through the style to reach the ovule in the ovary. The male germ cell fuses with the female germ cell (egg) – fertilisation – forming a zygote.
- 1 mark
The zygote divides many times to form an embryo inside the ovule; the ovule develops a tough coat and becomes the seed, while the ovary grows into the fruit.
Answer: (i) X stigma, Y anther; (ii) pollen grains; (iii) pollination; (iv) pollen tube → fertilisation → zygote → embryo → ovule becomes seed
Where the marks are
- Stigma and anther (½ + ½ mark)
- Pollen grains (1 mark)
- Pollination (1 mark)
- Explanation of seed formation via pollen tube, fertilisation, zygote, embryo, seed coat (2 marks)
