Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Which objects can he see clearly – near or far?

Hint 2

In this defect the image of a near object forms behind the retina.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. The student can see distant objects clearly but not nearby ones, so the defect is hypermetropia (far-sightedness).

    ½ mark
  2. Reason 1: the focal length of the eye lens is too long.

    ½ mark
  3. Reason 2: the eyeball has become too small (shortened).

    ½ mark
  4. Correction: a convex (converging) lens of suitable power.

    ½ mark

Answer: Hypermetropia; focal length of eye lens too long, eyeball too small; convex (converging) lens

Where the marks are

  • Names hypermetropia (½ mark)
  • Two causes (½ + ½ mark)
