Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2025, paper 31/3/1, section B, question 24, for 2 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q24 · 2 marks · Very short answerHeredity

(a) Explain how the proteins control the 'characteristics' in an organism with the help of an example of 'tallness' trait in pea plant.

(b) Name the section of DNA that controls the 'characteristics' in an organism.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Tallness in pea is due to a hormone; what makes the hormone?

Hint 2

Enzymes are proteins whose information lies in a part of DNA.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (a) The height of a pea plant depends on the amount of a plant hormone it makes. This hormone is produced by an enzyme (a protein). If the gene gives an efficient enzyme, more hormone is made and the plant is tall; if the gene is altered and the enzyme is less efficient, less hormone is made and the plant is short. So proteins (enzymes) coded by genes control characteristics.

    1 mark
  2. (b) The section of DNA that provides information for a protein and controls a characteristic is called a gene.

    1 mark

Answer: (a) Gene → enzyme (protein) → amount of growth hormone → tallness; (b) Gene

Where the marks are

  • Links gene → efficient enzyme → more hormone → tall plant (1 mark)
  • Names gene (1 mark)
