CBSE Class 10 Science 2025: question 17

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2025, paper 31/3/1, section A, question 17, for 1 mark. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q17 · 1 mark · Assertion-reasonCompetency-basedMetals and Non-metals

For Questions number 17 to 20, two statements are given, one labelled as Assertion (A) and the other labelled as Reason (R). Select the correct answer from the codes (A), (B), (C) and (D) given below: (A) Both Assertion (A) and Reason (R) are true and Reason (R) is the correct explanation of Assertion (A). (B) Both Assertion (A) and Reason (R) are true, but Reason (R) is not the correct explanation of Assertion (A). (C) Assertion (A) is true, but Reason (R) is false. (D) Assertion (A) is false, but Reason (R) is true.

Assertion (A): Hydrogen gas is not evolved when a metal reacts with nitric acid.

Reason (R): Nitric acid is a strong reducing agent and reduces the hydrogen produced in the reaction to water.

  1. (A)Both Assertion (A) and Reason (R) are true and Reason (R) is the correct explanation of Assertion (A).
  2. (B)Both Assertion (A) and Reason (R) are true, but Reason (R) is not the correct explanation of Assertion (A).
  3. (C)Assertion (A) is true, but Reason (R) is false.
  4. (D)Assertion (A) is false, but Reason (R) is true.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Does converting to involve oxidation or reduction of hydrogen?

Hint 2

A substance that oxidises another substance is called an oxidising agent.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. The Assertion is true: metals generally do not give with nitric acid.

  2. The Reason is false: is a strong oxidising agent, not a reducing agent. It oxidises the produced to water and is itself reduced to nitrogen oxides. So the answer is option (C).

    1 mark

Answer: (C) A is true, R is false

Where the marks are

  • Recognises that nitric acid is an oxidising agent, so R is false while A is true (1 mark)
