Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

What hazard does a hand being damaged by dripping liquid stand for?

Hint 2

Which of these hydroxides is a strong, highly soluble alkali (caustic soda)?

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. The sign shows liquid dropping onto a hand and eating into it. This is the corrosive hazard symbol.

  2. Of the hydroxides listed, sodium hydroxide (NaOH, caustic soda) is a strong alkali that is highly soluble. It is strongly corrosive and burns the skin.

  3. The hydroxides of aluminium and magnesium are weak bases that dissolve only slightly, and calcium hydroxide is much milder. So the container must hold sodium hydroxide: (C).

    1 mark

Answer: (C) Sodium

Where the marks are

  • Identifies sodium hydroxide as the corrosive substance, option (C) (1 mark)
