Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Think of three types of method: one hormonal, one device placed in the uterus, one operation.
Hint 2
The uterus prepares a lining every month. What happens to it with and without a zygote?
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- ½ mark
(i) Technique 1: Chemical method, i.e. oral contraceptive pills.
- ½ mark
Side effect: they change the hormonal balance of the body.
- ½ mark
Technique 2: Intrauterine device such as the Copper-T or loop.
- ½ mark
Side effect: it can cause irritation of the uterus.
- ½ mark
Technique 3: Surgical method, in which the fallopian tubes are blocked (tubectomy).
- ½ mark
Side effect: if not done properly, it may cause infections and other problems.
- 1 mark
(ii)(a) If fertilisation takes place, the zygote starts dividing and gets implanted in the thick, spongy lining of the uterus. It develops into an embryo and pregnancy begins.
- 1 mark
(b) If the egg is not fertilised, the thickened uterine lining is not needed. It breaks down and comes out through the vagina as blood and mucus; this is menstruation.
Answer: (i) Oral pills (hormonal imbalance), Copper-T (uterine irritation), surgical blocking of fallopian tubes (infection); (ii)(a) zygote implants in uterus; (b) lining sheds as menstruation
Where the marks are
- Three methods named (½ mark each)
- Side effect of each (½ mark each)
- Fertilisation: zygote implants in uterine lining (1 mark)
- No fertilisation: lining breaks down, menstruation (1 mark)
