Q23(A) · 2 marks · Very short answerLife Processes

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

What stimulus makes the leaves fold, and what makes roots grow down?

Hint 2

Ask whether each movement needs growth and whether it depends on the direction of the stimulus.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Difference 1: In the sensitive plant the stimulus is touch. The roots move downward in response to gravity.

    1 mark
  2. Difference 2: The leaf movement of the sensitive plant involves no growth; it happens through changes in water content of cells. It is also non-directional (nastic). The downward root movement is a growth movement (geotropism). It is directional, depending on the direction of the stimulus.

    1 mark

Answer: Sensitive plant: touch stimulus, no growth, non-directional; Roots: gravity stimulus, growth involved, directional

Where the marks are

  • Correct difference in stimulus (touch vs gravity) (1 mark)
  • Correct difference in growth or directionality (1 mark)
