Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Through which tiny pores do leaves exchange gases and lose water?
Hint 2
Think of the waste gas produced during photosynthesis.
Hint 3
Old leaves fall off. What could they carry away with them?
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
(1) Transpiration: the leaves lose excess water as water vapour through their stomata, which removes the extra water from the plant.
- 1 mark
(2) Removal of gaseous wastes: oxygen produced as a by-product of photosynthesis (and from respiration) diffuses out through the stomata. Also accepted: waste products stored in old leaves are removed when those leaves are shed.
Answer: Leaves remove excess water by transpiration and give out waste oxygen through stomata (wastes are also stored in leaves that are shed)
Where the marks are
- Excess water removed through transpiration (1 mark)
- Waste oxygen given out through stomata, or wastes lost by shedding of leaves (1 mark)
