CBSE Class 10 Science 2023: question 32

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2023, paper 31/2/1, section C, question 32, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q32 · 3 marks · Short answerElectricity

Explain the meaning of overloading of an electrical circuit. List two possible causes due to which overloading may occur in household circuits. Write one preventive measure that should be taken to avoid overloading of domestic circuits.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Overloading is about how much current flows compared with what the wiring can carry.

Hint 2

What happens when many high-power appliances run from one socket?

Hint 3

Which safety device breaks the circuit when the current gets too high?

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Overloading: It is the condition in which an excessively large current, more than the rated value, flows through the wires of a circuit. This heats the wires and may cause a fire.

    1 mark
  2. Cause 1: Connecting too many appliances to a single socket at the same time.

    ½ mark
  3. Cause 2: Accidental hike in the supply voltage, or the live and neutral wires coming into direct contact (short-circuiting).

    ½ mark
  4. Preventive measure: Use a fuse or MCB of proper rating in the circuit, which melts or trips when the current is too large. Also avoid connecting too many appliances to one socket.

    1 mark

Answer: Overloading is an excessive current flowing through the circuit; causes: too many appliances in one socket, supply voltage hike or short circuit; prevention: use a fuse/MCB of proper rating

Where the marks are

  • Meaning of overloading: excessive current through the wires (1 mark)
  • Any two causes (½ + ½ mark)
  • Any one preventive measure, e.g. fuse or not overloading sockets (1 mark)
