CBSE Class 10 Mathematics Basic 2026: question 31

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2026, paper 430/3/1, section C, question 31, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q31 · 3 marks · Short answerCircles

In the given figure, a circle is inscribed in a quadrilateral ABCD which touches the sides AB, BC, CD and DA at P, Q, R and S respectively. Prove that .

Figure in the paper: Quadrilateral ABCD with an inscribed circle touching AB at P, BC at Q, CD at R and DA at S. Diagonals AC and BD intersect at O; angles AOB and COD are marked at O. See it in the official paper.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Join the centre O to the vertices and to the points of contact.

Hint 2

Tangents from each vertex are equal, so look for pairs of congruent triangles at each vertex.

Hint 3

The eight angles at O add up to 360°. Group them into and .

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Let O be the centre of the inscribed circle. Join OA, OB, OC, OD and OP, OQ, OR, OS.

  2. In and : [tangents from an external point are equal], [radii] and [common]. So [SSS], which gives .

    1 mark
  3. Similarly, , and .

    ½ mark
  4. The angles round the point O add up to : , so .

    1 mark
  5. Hence , i.e. .

    ½ mark

Answer: (proved)

Where the marks are

  • Proves using equal tangents, giving equal angles at O (1 mark)
  • Writes the similar equal pairs at B, C and D (½ mark)
  • Uses the sum of angles at O = 360° and pairs the equal angles (1 mark)
  • Concludes (½ mark)
