Q35(a) · 5 marks · Long answerStatistics

The lengths of 40 leaves of a plant are measured, correct to the nearest millimetre and data obtained is represented in the following table. Find the median length (in mm) of the leaves.

Length in (mm)Number of leaves
100 – 1208
120 – 1409
140 – 16012

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Make a cumulative frequency column first.

Hint 2

Find and the class whose cf first reaches or crosses it.

Hint 3

Use Median .

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Cumulative frequencies: 100–120: 8; 120–140: 17; 140–160: 29; 160–180: 34; 180–200: 40.

  2. , so . The cf first exceeds 20 in the class 140–160, so the median class is 140–160.

Answer: Median length = 145 mm

Where the marks are

  • Writes the correct cumulative frequency column (1 mark)
  • Identifies the median class 140–160 (1 mark)
  • Writes the values correctly (1 mark)
  • Substitutes into the median formula (1 mark)
  • Gets the median 145 mm (1 mark)
