CBSE Class 10 Mathematics Standard 2026: question 35
Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2026, paper 30/3/1, section D, question 35, for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.
Q35 · 5 marks · Long answerCompetency-basedSome Applications of Trigonometry
A boy standing on a horizontal plane is flying a kite with a string of length 60 m, at an angle of elevation of . Another boy standing on the roof of a 20 m high building, finds the angle of elevation of same kite to be . If both the boys are on opposite sides of the kite, find the distance of the first boy from the base of the building. Also, find the height of the kite from the ground. (Use )

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
The string is the hypotenuse of a right triangle with angle 30° at the first boy.
Hint 2
Use sin 30° to get the kite's height and cos 30° to get the first boy's horizontal distance from the foot of the kite.
Hint 3
From the roof, only (kite height − 20) is the vertical side; tan 45° = 1 then gives the horizontal gap from the building.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

Figure:
- K is the kite and B is the first boy on the ground, with string m and .
- CM is the 20 m building, with the second boy at M.
- KP ground at P, and meets KP at L, so m and .
- Let , and . The angle of elevation .
- C (building) and B (first boy) lie on opposite sides of P.
