CBSE Class 10 Mathematics Standard 2026: question 31(b)

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2026, paper 30/3/1, section C, question 31(b), for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q31(b) · 3 marks · Short answerCircles

In the given figure, PA is the tangent to the circle with centre O such that OA = 10 cm, AB = 8 cm and AB OP. Find the length of PB.

Figure in the paper: Circle with centre O. External point P with tangents PA and PC touching the circle at A and C. B lies on line PO with AB perpendicular to OP (right-angle mark at B). OA = 10 cm, AB = 8 cm. PA is the tangent at A. See it in the official paper.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

First find OB from right triangle OBA.

Hint 2

∠OAP = 90° because PA is a tangent. Write PA² in two ways: from triangle PBA and from triangle PAO. Equate them.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. In right (right angle at B):
    cm

    ½ mark
  2. Let . In :

    ½ mark
  3. [tangent ⟂ radius]. So in right :

    Using (i):

    ½ mark
  4. cm

    ½ mark
  5. By Pythagoras in :
    cm

    ½ mark
  6. cm cm.

    ½ mark

Answer: cm ≈ 10.67 cm

Where the marks are

  • Finds OB = 6 cm by Pythagoras (½ mark)
  • Writes tan θ = 8/6 in triangle OBA (½ mark)
  • Uses tangent ⟂ radius to write tan θ = AP/10 (½ mark)
  • Gets AP = 40/3 cm (½ mark)
  • Gets OP = 50/3 cm (½ mark)
  • Gets PB = OP − OB = 32/3 cm (½ mark)
  • Alternative: and , equated to give PB = 32/3 cm (½ + ½ + 1 + 1)
