Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Use proof by contradiction: suppose in lowest terms.

Hint 2

Square both sides and use the fact that if a prime divides , it divides p. Do the same for q.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Assume, to the contrary, that is rational.
Then , where are integers, , and are coprime.

    ½ mark
  2. Squaring: . So is divisible by 5.
Since 5 is prime, is divisible by 5 ...(1) [if a prime divides , it divides ].

    1 mark
  3. Let for some integer . Then .
So is divisible by 5, and hence is divisible by 5 ...(2).

    1 mark
  4. From (1) and (2), 5 is a common factor of and . This contradicts the fact that and are coprime.
So our assumption is wrong, and is irrational.

    ½ mark

Answer: is irrational (proved by contradiction).

Where the marks are

  • Assumes with p, q coprime and q ≠ 0 (½ mark)
  • Gets and deduces 5 divides p (1 mark)
  • Substitutes p = 5a and deduces 5 divides q (1 mark)
  • States the contradiction and concludes (½ mark)
