CBSE Class 10 Mathematics Standard 2026: question 25

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2026, paper 30/3/1, section B, question 25, for 2 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q25 · 2 marks · Very short answerSurface Areas and Volumes

A toy is in the form of a cone mounted on a hemisphere of radius 7 cm. The total height of the toy is 31 cm. Find the total surface area of the toy.

Figure in the paper: A toy: a cone with vertical axis sitting on the flat circular face of a hemisphere (hemisphere below, its rim visible as an ellipse at the junction). See it in the official paper.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

The total height includes the hemisphere's radius. Subtract it to get the cone's height, then find the slant height.

Hint 2

Only the curved surfaces are visible. Add the cone's curved surface area and the hemisphere's curved surface area.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Radius cm.
    Height of the cone: cm.
    Slant height: cm.

    ½ mark
  2. The flat circular faces are joined together, so they are hidden. Therefore:
TSA of toy = CSA of cone + CSA of hemisphere

    1 mark
  3. cm².
So the total surface area of the toy is .

    ½ mark

Answer: 858 cm²

Where the marks are

  • Finds the cone height 24 cm and slant height 25 cm (½ mark)
  • Writes TSA = and substitutes correctly (1 mark)
  • Gets 858 cm² (½ mark)
