Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
The lights change together again after a time that is a multiple of 45, 75 and 60 at once.
Hint 2
Find the LCM using prime factorisation, convert seconds to minutes and add to 5:00 a.m.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1½ marks
Prime factorisation: , ,
- ½ mark
LCM
- ½ mark
900 seconds minutes
- ½ mark
The lights will next change together 15 minutes after 5:00 a.m., i.e. at 5:15 a.m.
Answer: 5:15 a.m.
Where the marks are
- Correct prime factorisation of 45, 75, 60 (1½ marks)
- LCM = 900 (½ mark)
- Converts 900 s to 15 minutes (½ mark)
- Next change together at 5:15 a.m. (½ mark)
