CBSE Class 10 Mathematics Basic 2025: question 34(b)

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2025, paper 430/4/1, section D, question 34(b), for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q34(b) · 5 marks · Long answerTriangles

In ABC, P and Q are points on sides AB and AC respectively such that PQ BC. Prove that the median AD, drawn from A to BC, bisects PQ.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Let AD meet PQ at R. You need to show PR = RQ.

Hint 2

Look for two pairs of similar triangles that share the side AR and AD.

Hint 3

Equate the ratios and use BD = DC, since AD is a median.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Figure: with P on AB and Q on AC, PQ ∥ BC. Median AD meets BC at D (BD = DC) and cuts PQ at R.

    ½ mark
  2. Since PQ ∥ BC, PR ∥ BD. In and : [common], [corresponding angles]. So [AA similarity].

    1 mark
  3. Hence ...(i)

    ½ mark
  4. Similarly, in and : [common], [corresponding angles], so [AA]. This gives ...(ii)

    1 mark
  5. From (i) and (ii):

    ½ mark
  6. AD is a median, so . Therefore .

    1 mark
  7. Hence R is the mid-point of PQ, i.e. the median AD bisects PQ.

    ½ mark

Answer: , so the median AD bisects PQ.

Where the marks are

  • Correct figure (½ mark)
  • by AA (1 mark)
  • Ratio (½ mark)
  • and (1 mark)
  • Equates the two ratios (½ mark)
  • Uses BD = DC to get PR = RQ (1 mark)
  • Conclusion (½ mark)
