CBSE Class 10 Mathematics Basic 2025: question 31
Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2025, paper 430/3/1, section C, question 31, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.
Q31 · 3 marks · Short answerCircles
In the given figure, a circle is inscribed in a quadrilateral ABCD which touches the sides AB, BC, CD and DA at P, Q, R and S respectively. Prove that .
Figure in the paper: Quadrilateral ABCD (A bottom left, B bottom right, C top right, D top left) with an inscribed circle touching AB at P, BC at Q, CD at R and DA at S. Diagonals AC and BD intersect at O, which is inside the circle; angle AOB is marked at O, and angle COD is also marked at O on the opposite side. See it in the official paper.

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Join the centre O to the four points of contact and to the four vertices.
Hint 2
Each vertex gives a pair of congruent right triangles. Then add up all eight angles round O.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
Join OP, OQ, OR, OS, where O is the centre. In and : [radii], [common], [tangent ⟂ radius]. So [RHS], and hence [CPCT].
- 1 mark
Similarly, , and .
- ½ mark
The angles round O add up to :
- ½ mark
. Hence proved.
Answer: ∠AOB + ∠COD = 180° (proved)
Where the marks are
- Proves ΔOAP ≅ ΔOAS and gets equal angles at O (1 mark)
- States the similar equalities for the other three pairs of angles (1 mark)
- Uses angles round O = 360° (½ mark)
- Concludes ∠AOB + ∠COD = 180° (½ mark)
