Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Let the equal side be x and the base be y. Write two equations from the given facts.

Hint 2

Once you know all three sides, use Heron's formula with s = 16. Or drop a perpendicular to the base and use Pythagoras.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Let each equal side be cm and the base be cm.

    Perimeter: …(1)

    1 mark
  2. Given condition: …(2)

    1 mark
  3. Substitute (2) in (1): , and .

So the sides are 10 cm, 10 cm and 12 cm.

    1 mark
  4. Semi-perimeter: cm

    ½ mark
  5. By Heron's formula:

    Area

    1 mark
  6. ½ mark

Answer: Area = 48 cm²

Where the marks are

  • Forms (1 mark)
  • Forms (1 mark)
  • Solves: , (½ + ½ marks)
  • Semi-perimeter = 16 cm (½ mark)
  • Heron's formula with substitution (1 mark)
  • Area = 48 cm² (½ mark)
