Q34(B) · 5 marks · Long answerSurface Areas and Volumes

An empty cone of radius 3cm and height 12cm is filled with ice-cream such that the lower part of the cone which is of the volume of the cone is unfilled (empty) but a hemisphere is formed on the top. Find the volume of the ice-cream.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

The ice-cream fills only part of the cone. What fraction is filled?

Hint 2

The hemisphere sits on the cone's open top, so it has the same radius, 3 cm.

Hint 3

Total = of the cone's volume .

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Volume of the cone cm³

The lower of the cone is empty, so the ice-cream fills of it:

    cm³

    2 marks
  2. Hemisphere on top. Its radius equals the cone's radius, cm.

    Volume cm³

    1½ marks
  3. Total volume of ice-cream cm³

    cm³

    1½ marks

Answer: cm³ ≈ 150.86 cm³

Where the marks are

  • Finds cone volume cm³ and ice-cream inside the cone cm³ (2 marks)
  • Finds hemisphere volume cm³ (1½ marks)
  • Adds to get the total cm³ (1½ marks)
