Q24(A) · 2 marks · Very short answerCompetency-basedAreas Related to Circles

A horse, a cow and a goat are tied, each by ropes of length 14m, at the corners A, B and C respectively, of a grassy triangular field ABC with sides of lengths 35m, 40m and 50 m. Find the area of grass field that can be grazed by them.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Each rope sweeps out a sector at one corner of the triangle. What is its central angle?

Hint 2

You do not need each angle separately. What do the three angles of a triangle add up to?

Hint 3

The total is a semicircle of radius 14 m.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Each animal grazes a sector of radius m whose central angle is the angle of the triangle at its corner. The sides are 35 m, 40 m and 50 m, each longer than m, so the three sectors do not overlap. Let the angles at A, B, C be .

  2. Total grazed area . Since [angle sum property of a triangle], this is .

    1 mark
  3. m. So the three animals can graze 308 m of the field.

    1 mark

Answer: 308 m²

Where the marks are

  • Adds the three sectors and uses the angle sum to get (1 mark)
  • Calculates the area as 308 m² (1 mark)
