Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Half of BC is BD and half of QR is QM, since AD and PM are medians.

Hint 2

First prove to get an equal pair of angles, then use SAS on the big triangles.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Figure: with median AD (D mid-point of BC) and with median PM (M mid-point of QR).

    ½ mark
  2. Given: , AD and PM medians. To prove: .

    1 mark
  3. Since D and M are mid-points, , . So

    1 mark
  4. [SSS similarity criterion]

    ½ mark
  5. [corresponding angles of similar triangles]

    ½ mark
  6. In and : [given] and [proved]. [SAS similarity criterion].

    1½ marks

Answer: (via by SSS, then SAS).

Where the marks are

  • Correct figure (½ mark)
  • Given and to prove written (1 mark)
  • Shows (1 mark)
  • by SSS (½ mark)
  • Deduces (½ mark)
  • Concludes by SAS (1½ marks)
