CBSE Class 10 Mathematics Basic 2024: question 32(a)
Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2024, paper 430/5/1, section D, question 32(a), for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.
Q32(a) · 5 marks · Long answerSurface Areas and Volumes
A toy is in the form of a cone of radius 7 cm mounted on a hemisphere of same radius. The total height of the toy is 31 cm. Find the surface area of the toy.

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
The total height includes the radius of the hemisphere; subtract it to get the cone's height.
Hint 2
Only curved surfaces are visible: CSA of hemisphere plus CSA of cone .
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
Radius of cone = radius of hemisphere cm. Height of cone cm.
- 1 mark
Slant height cm
- ½ mark
Surface area of toy = CSA of hemisphere + CSA of cone
- 2 marks
- ½ mark
cm²
Answer: 858 cm²
Where the marks are
- Height of cone 24 cm (1 mark)
- Slant height 25 cm (1 mark)
- Surface area = CSA of hemisphere + CSA of cone (½ mark)
- Correct substitution (2 marks)
- Answer 858 cm² (½ mark)
