Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Expand both squares. The middle terms cancel.
Hint 2
Write tan A = sin A/cos A and sec A = 1/cos A, then replace cos²A by 1 − sin²A.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
LHS
- 1½ marks
- ½ mark
Using : RHS. Hence proved.
Answer: LHS = 2(1 + sin²A)/(1 − sin²A) = RHS
Where the marks are
- Expands both squares to get 2(tan²A + sec²A) (1 mark)
- Converts to sine and cosine to get 2(sin²A + 1)/cos²A (1½ marks)
- Uses cos²A = 1 − sin²A to reach the RHS (½ mark)
