CBSE Class 10 Mathematics Basic 2024: question 27(a)

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2024, paper 430/4/1, section C, question 27(a), for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q27(a) · 3 marks · Short answerCircles

Prove that opposite sides of a quadrilateral circumscribing a circle subtends supplementary angles at the centre of the circle.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Join the centre to each vertex and to each point of contact. This gives 8 angles at O.

Hint 2

Equal tangents from each vertex give congruent triangle pairs, so the 8 angles pair up. Then use the fact that the angles round a point total 360°.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Figure: quadrilateral ABCD circumscribes a circle with centre O. The sides AB, BC, CD, DA touch the circle at P, Q, R, S. Join OA, OB, OC, OD, OP, OQ, OR, OS. Mark , , , , , , , . To prove: and .

    ½ mark
  2. In and : [common], [radii], [tangents from an external point are equal]. So [SSS], giving [CPCT].

    1 mark
  3. In the same way, , and .

    ½ mark
  4. The angles round O add up to : . So , i.e. .

    ½ mark
  5. Since and , we get . Similarly, , i.e. . Hence opposite sides subtend supplementary angles at the centre.

    ½ mark

Answer: ∠AOB + ∠COD = 180° and ∠BOC + ∠AOD = 180°.

Where the marks are

  • Labelled figure with given and to prove (½ mark)
  • △AOP ≅ △AOS by SSS, so ∠1 = ∠2 (1 mark)
  • States the other pairs of equal angles (½ mark)
  • Uses the 360° sum round O to get (∠1+∠8)+(∠4+∠5) = 180° (½ mark)
  • Concludes both pairs are supplementary (½ mark)
