CBSE Class 10 Mathematics Basic 2024: question 34
Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2024, paper 430/3/1, section D, question 34, for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.
Q34 · 5 marks · Long answerCompetency-basedSome Applications of Trigonometry
Two poles of equal height are standing opposite each other on either side of a road, which is m wide. From a point somewhere between them on the road, the angles of elevation of the top of the poles are and respectively. Find the height of the poles and the distances of the point from the poles.

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Draw both poles and the point on the road between them; you get two right triangles with the same height.
Hint 2
Write and in terms of and the two unknown distances.
Hint 3
The two distances add up to the width of the road, 100 m.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

m ( m). So each pole is m high; the point is 25 m from the pole whose top is seen at and 75 m from the other pole.
Answer: Height of each pole = m (≈ 43.3 m); distances of the point from the poles: 25 m and 75 m
