Q30(B) · 3 marks · Short answerSurface Areas and Volumes

A juice glass is cylindrical in shape with hemi-spherical raised up portion at the bottom. The inner diameter of glass is 10 cm and its height is 14 cm. Find the capacity of the glass. (use )

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

The raised hemispherical bottom takes up space, so it reduces the capacity.

Hint 2

Subtract the volume of a hemisphere of radius 5 cm from the volume of the cylinder.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Radius of glass (and of hemisphere) cm, cm

    ½ mark
  2. Capacity = volume of cylinder − volume of hemisphere

    2 marks
  3. cm³

    ½ mark

Answer: cm³ ≈ 837.33 cm³

Where the marks are

  • r = 5 cm (½ mark)
  • Capacity = cylinder − hemisphere with correct substitution (2 marks)
  • ≈ 837.33 cm³ (½ mark)
