CBSE Class 10 Mathematics Standard 2024: question 35
Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2024, paper 30/5/1, section D, question 35, for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.
Q35 · 5 marks · Long answerSurface Areas and Volumes
A wooden article was made by scooping out a hemisphere from each end of a solid cylinder, as shown in the figure. If the height of the cylinder is cm and its base is of radius cm, find the total surface area of the article.
Figure in the paper: A solid cylinder standing upright with a hemispherical cavity scooped out of the top end and another hemispherical cavity scooped out of the bottom end. The cavities are shown as shaded hemispherical bowls at both ends. See it in the official paper.

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Think about which surfaces are visible: the curved side of the cylinder and the inside of the two bowls. The flat circular ends are removed.
Hint 2
Each hemispherical cavity has curved surface area ; add both to .
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
TSA of article = CSA of cylinder + CSA of two hemispherical cavities (r = 2.1 cm, h = 5.8 cm).
CSA of cylinder - 1 mark
cm²
- 1 mark
CSA of two hemispheres
- 1 mark
cm²
- 1 mark
Total surface area of article cm²
Answer: 132 cm²
Where the marks are
- Writes CSA of cylinder with values (1 mark)
- CSA of cylinder = 76.56 cm² (1 mark)
- Writes CSA of two hemispheres with values (1 mark)
- = 55.44 cm² (1 mark)
- TSA = 132 cm² (1 mark)
