Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Use two variables: one for each type of note.
Hint 2
One equation counts the notes, the other counts the money; solve them together.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
Let the number of ₹50 notes be and of ₹100 notes be . Total notes: ...(i)
- 1 mark
Total amount: ...(ii)
- 1 mark
Subtracting (i) from (ii): ; then . So she received 10 notes of ₹50 and 15 notes of ₹100.
Answer: 10 notes of ₹50 and 15 notes of ₹100
Where the marks are
- Forms x + y = 25 (1 mark)
- Forms 50x + 100y = 2000 i.e. x + 2y = 40 (1 mark)
- Solves: x = 10, y = 15 (½ + ½ marks)
