CBSE Class 10 Mathematics Standard 2024: question 31
Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2024, paper 30/3/1, section C, question 31, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.
Q31 · 3 marks · Short answerCircles
Prove that the tangents drawn at the end points of a chord of a circle makes equal angles with the chord.

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Let the two tangents meet at P. What do you know about the lengths of tangents from P?
Hint 2
Which kind of triangle is PAB, and what does that tell you about its base angles?
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

Figure: draw a circle with centre O and a chord AB. Draw tangents at A and B that meet at an external point P. Join PA and PB.
Given: AB is a chord, and PA and PB are tangents at A and B.
To prove: .
- 1 mark
In : [lengths of tangents drawn from an external point to a circle are equal].
- 1 mark
So is isosceles. Hence [angles opposite equal sides are equal]. Therefore the tangents make equal angles with the chord.
(Alternative: and [tangent ⟂ radius], and since . So . This version also works when AB is a diameter and the tangents are parallel.)
Answer: Since PA = PB, ∠PAB = ∠PBA; the tangents make equal angles with the chord (proved)
Where the marks are
- Correct labelled figure with given and to prove (1 mark)
- States with the reason (equal tangents from an external point) (1 mark)
- Concludes (angles opposite equal sides) (1 mark)
