Q32 · 5 marks · Long answerAreas Related to Circles

An arc of a circle of radius 21 cm subtends an angle of at the centre. Find:

  1. (i)

    the length of the arc.

    2 marks
  2. (ii)

the area of the minor segment of the circle made by the corresponding chord.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Arc length is the fraction of the circumference.

Hint 2

Minor segment = sector − triangle OAB. What kind of triangle is OAB when the angle at O is ?

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Figure: a circle with centre O, chord AB, and cm. The minor segment lies between chord AB and arc ALB.

    (i) Arc length

    1½ marks
  2. (i) cm.

    ½ mark
  3. (ii) Area of sector OALB cm².

    1 mark
  4. (ii) In , cm and . The base angles are equal and add to , so each is and the triangle is equilateral.

    Area cm² cm².

    1½ marks
  5. (ii) Area of minor segment = area of sector − area of triangle cm² cm².

    ½ mark

Answer: (i) 22 cm; (ii) cm² ≈ 40.05 cm²

Where the marks are

  • Uses the arc length formula with correct values (1½ marks)
  • Arc length = 22 cm (½ mark)
  • Area of sector = 231 cm² (1 mark)
  • Area of the equilateral triangle OAB = cm² (1½ marks)
  • Area of minor segment = ≈ 40.05 cm² (½ mark)
