CBSE Class 10 Mathematics Basic 2023: question 37
Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2023, paper 430/2/1, section E, question 37, for 4 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Case Study 2. Circles play an important part in our life. When a circular object is hung on the wall with a cord at nail N, the cords NA and NB work like tangents. Observe the figure, given that ANO = and OA = 5 cm.
Based on the above, answer the following questions:
- (i)1 mark
Find the distance AN.
- (ii)1 mark
Find the measure of AOB.
- (iii)2 marks
(a) Find the total length of cords NA, NB and the chord AB.
OR
(iii)2 marks(b) If ANO is , then name the type of quadrilateral OANB. Justify your answer.
Figure in the paper: A circle with centre O. External point N is above the circle; tangents NA and NB touch the circle at A and B. Radii OA and OB are drawn. Dashed segment NO goes from N to O and meets chord AB at its midpoint M. Chord AB is drawn horizontally above O. See it in the official paper.

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
The radius OA meets the tangent NA at a right angle, so △OAN is right-angled at A.
Hint 2
NO bisects ∠ANB, and the angles of quadrilateral OANB add to 360°.
Hint 3
Two equal tangents with a 60° angle between them make an equilateral triangle with AB.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- ½ mark
(i) [tangent ⟂ radius], so in right :
- ½ mark
cm
- 1 mark
(ii) NO bisects [tangents from an external point], so and . In quadrilateral OANB, , so .
- ½ mark
(iii)(a) [tangents from N] and , so ; is equilateral.
- 1 mark
Hence cm.
- ½ mark
Total length cm cm.
- ½ mark
(iii)(b) If , then , and .
- 1 mark
So every angle of OANB is ( as tangent ⟂ radius).
- ½ mark
Also (radii) and ; in right with , cm. All sides equal and all angles right, so OANB is a square.
Answer: (i) AN = 5√3 cm; (ii) ∠AOB = 120°; (iii)(a) 15√3 cm (≈ 25.98 cm); (iii)(b) OANB is a square
Where the marks are
- Uses (½ mark) and gets AN = 5√3 cm (½ mark)
- Finds ∠ANB = 60° and ∠AOB = 120° (1 mark)
- (iii)(a) Shows △NAB equilateral (½ mark), AB = 5√3 cm (1 mark), total 15√3 cm (½ mark)
- (iii)(b) ∠AOB = 90° (½ mark), all angles 90° (1 mark), adjacent sides equal ⇒ square (½ mark)
