CBSE Class 10 Mathematics Standard 2023: question 35
Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2023, paper 30/5/1, section D, question 35, for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.
Q35 · 5 marks · Long answerCompetency-basedAreas Related to Circles
A horse is tied to a peg at one corner of a square shaped grass field of side 15 m by means of a 5 m long rope. Find the area of that part of the field in which the horse can graze. Also, find the increase in grazing area if length of rope is increased to 10 m. (Use )
Figure in the paper: A square field of side 15 m. The peg is fixed at one corner, and a quarter-circle arc is drawn from that corner inside the square showing the grazing region of radius 5 m. See it in the official paper.

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
The peg is at a corner of the square. What angle does the horse's region cover at that corner?
Hint 2
The region the horse can reach is a sector of angle 90°, i.e. one quarter of a circle whose radius is the rope length.
Hint 3
Find the quadrant area for both rope lengths and subtract the smaller from the larger.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
The horse is tied at a corner of the square and the rope (5 m) is shorter than the side (15 m). The corner angle is , so the grazing region is a quadrant (sector of angle ) of radius m.
Grazing area
- 1 mark
- 1 mark
With a 10 m rope (still less than 15 m), the region is again a quadrant, now of radius 10 m.
New grazing area
- 1 mark
- 1 mark
Increase in grazing area
Answer: Grazing area = 19.625 m²; increase in grazing area = 58.875 m²
Where the marks are
- Uses quadrant area with r = 5 m (1 mark)
- Gets 19.625 m² (1 mark)
- Uses quadrant area with r = 10 m (1 mark)
- Gets 78.5 m² (1 mark)
- Increase = 58.875 m² (1 mark)
