Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Draw a horizontal line from the top of the building to the tower. This splits the tower into 7 m and m.

Hint 2

Use the 30° depression to find the horizontal distance first, then use for the upper part of the tower.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Figure: Let DE be the building, with D its foot and E its top, so m. Let AC be the cable tower, with C its foot and A its top, and m.

Draw EB ⟂ AC, so EB is horizontal and BCDE is a rectangle. Then m and m.

The angle of elevation is and the angle of depression is . Since EB ∥ CD (alternate angles), .

  2. Let m. In right :

    , so

    m

    So m.

  5. The height of the tower is 28 m.

    ½ mark

Answer: 28 m

Where the marks are

  • Correct labelled figure (1 mark)
  • Uses to find the horizontal distance m (1½ marks)
  • Sets up (1 mark)
  • Substitutes to get (1 mark)
