CBSE Class 10 Mathematics Standard 2023: question 28

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2023, paper 30/4/1, section C, question 28, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q28 · 3 marks · Short answerCircles

Prove that the angle between the two tangents drawn from an external point to a circle is supplementary to the angle subtended by the line-segment joining the points of contact at the centre.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Join the centre to both points of contact. What shape is formed?

Hint 2

What angle does a tangent make with the radius at the point of contact? Use the angle sum of a quadrilateral.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Given: A circle with centre O. PA and PB are tangents from an external point P, touching the circle at A and B.

    To prove: .

Figure: Draw the circle with centre O and a point P outside it. Draw tangents PA and PB, and join OA and OB to form the quadrilateral OAPB.

    1 mark
  2. In quadrilateral OAPB, the angles add up to :

    1 mark
  3. [tangent ⟂ radius at the point of contact].

    So

    ½ mark
  4. Hence the angle between the tangents is supplementary to the angle subtended at the centre by AB.

    ½ mark

Answer: , i.e., the two angles are supplementary.

Where the marks are

  • Correct labelled figure with tangents PA, PB and radii OA, OB (1 mark)
  • Uses the angle sum of quadrilateral OAPB (1 mark)
  • Uses tangent ⟂ radius to get (½ mark)
  • Concludes (½ mark)
