Q28(a) · 3 marks · Short answerPair of Linear Equations in Two Variables

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
A two-digit number with tens digit x and units digit y equals 10x + y.
Hint 2
'Differ by 2' can mean x − y = 2 or y − x = 2. Solve both cases with x + y = 6.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- ½ mark
Let the tens digit be and the units digit be .
The number is . The number with its digits reversed is .
- ½ mark
Given condition:
...(1)
- ½ mark
The digits differ by 2, so either ...(2)
- ½ mark
or ...(3)
- ½ mark
Case 1: adding (1) and (2) gives , so and . The number is 42.
- ½ mark
Case 2: adding (1) and (3) gives , so and . The number is 24.
So there are two such numbers: 42 and 24.
Answer: The number is 42 or 24; there are 2 such numbers
Where the marks are
- Writes the number and its reverse as 10x + y and 10y + x (1/2 mark)
- Gets x + y = 6 (1/2 mark)
- Writes x − y = 2 (1/2 mark)
- Writes y − x = 2 as the second possibility (1/2 mark)
- Solves to get 42 (1/2 mark)
- Solves to get 24 and states there are two numbers (1/2 mark)
