CBSE Class 10 Mathematics Standard sample paper 2023-24: question 22

From the official CBSE sample question paper for 2023-24, section B, question 22, for 2 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q22 · 2 marks · Very short answerTriangles

ABCD is a parallelogram. Point P divides AB in the ratio 2:3 and point Q divides DC in the ratio 4:1. Prove that OC is half of OA.

Figure in the paper: Parallelogram ABCD with A bottom-left, B bottom-right, C top-right, D top-left. P lies on AB and Q lies on DC. Lines AQ and CP are drawn, meeting at O inside the parallelogram; O lies on AQ and on PC. See it in the official paper.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Write AP and CQ as fractions of the common side length a.

Hint 2

Look for two similar triangles at O using .

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Let (opposite sides of a parallelogram). P divides AB in the ratio 2:3, so .

    ½ mark
  2. Q divides DC in the ratio 4:1, so and .

    ½ mark
  3. O is the point where the diagonal AC meets PQ. In and : [alternate angles, ] and [vertically opposite]. So [AA similarity].

    ½ mark
  4. Hence . So . Proved.

    ½ mark

Answer: gives , so .

Where the marks are

  • Expresses AP in terms of side a (½ mark)
  • Expresses CQ in terms of side a (½ mark)
  • Proves by AA (½ mark)
  • Uses the ratio of sides to conclude (½ mark)
